GRACE in Action has achieved our goal of providing affordable housing for a family that is experiencing housing insecurity. And we’re just getting started!
We give thanks to our donors who have enabled us to turn this dream into a reality, allowing us to acquire a beautiful house in such a way as to ensure that the family will be able to live there for as long as they desire. We believe that this long-term stability will provide the family with a firm foundation that will enable them to flourish—living into their hopes and dreams for their family’s future.
It has been a long journey, from an initial dream to this current reality. Along the way, we learned a great deal about the hardships facing individuals and families experiencing homelessness and housing insecurity. Key among these learnings is the brokenness of the so-called “housing market” on which we as a society rely to create an adequate supply of housing for people at all levels of income. In short, the housing market fails most households in the lowest third of incomes who are forced to live in units that do not meet their needs and/or for which they pay far too much of their income for housing.
Similarly, we have learned that the wide range of interventions intended to remedy the housing market’s failures are woefully inadequate in both their scope and implementation. For government agencies and nonprofit housing assistance organizations, it seems that we expect them to address the flood of housing market failures armed with only tin cups and buckets. The policies, programs and resources dedicated to address the housing market’s failures barely scratch the surface of such brokenness.
But for today, for this family and for this house, we give thanks that we have been able to provide safe and secure affordable housing so that the family can begin their journey toward long term stability. We believe that all people are entitled to safe and secure housing as a basic human right. We pray that this house enables this family to dream dreams of what they want to accomplish and set goals for steps they want to achieve. We are grateful to you, our donors, for allowing us to turn this vision into reality for this family.
